Don’t Panic! - An abnormal pap smear does not necessarily mean cancer. There are many reasons why smears return a ‘positive’ or abnormal result including many low grade infections or technical problems with the smear itself.
Colposcopy
Frequently with an abnormal smear you will be referred for a colposcopy to clarify the smear findings. This involves a similar process to taking a pap smear with the additional use of a magnifying device called a colposcope to view the cervix and vagina under magnification. A mild solution of vinegar will be applied to the cervix during this examination which helps to identify any abnormal cells better. A small biopsy may be required at this time which takes a split second to perform usually with minimal discomfort. Results are then reviewed soon thereafter and discussed with you to decide on future treatment or follow up as required. If treatment is required at a later date this is usually just a minor day surgical procedure.
